Orangewood LodgeOrangewood Lodge, Albert Falls, KwaZulu NatalDescriptionOrangewood Lodge is situated on the banks of Albert Falls Dam at the entrance to Khayalami Bay and boasts spectacular views of the dam. We are only 25 minutes from Pierermaritzburg and 30 minutes from Howick. The Lodge is nestled in a large indigenous garden with an abundance of birdlife and is surrounded by orange groves which form part of an operating citrus farm. We have 4 bedrooms and can accommodate up to 10 people. The main room is en suite and has a queen bed and cot, the second room has a double, the upstairs bedroom has two three quarter beds and the fourth room has two single beds and a double bunk bed. The double volume open plan lounge and dining room lead onto a large verandah with seating and dining areas. The pub also leads onto the verandah and outside braai facility. Accommodation We offer upmarket self catering accommodation for up to 10 people. The double volume open plan lounge and dining room has wooden floors and there is a large fireplace in the lounge. Concertina doors open up onto the large verandah where there is ample seating to take in the stunning panoramic views. The pub also leads onto the verandah and outside braai facility. The pub has a TV and bar fridge. A weber is also provided. The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, microwave, fridge and chest freezer and all crockery and cutlery. The lodge is serviced daily and a laundry service is also available. All linen is provided except for swimming towels. The large garden is surrounded by an electric fence and has an electric access gate. THE WHITE ROOM This room has a queen extra length bed and an en suite bathroom with french doors leading onto the verandah.Beautiful white linen is provided and the room has wooden floors and a ceiling fan. There are beautiful views of the dam through the large windows. THE STONE ROOM This room has a double bed and a cot with a stable door leading onto the verandah. The room has underfloor heating and a ceiling fan. THE BLUE ROOM This upstairs loft bedroom has two twin beds. This room is carpeted and also has a free standing fan. A window looks out onto expansive dam views. THE GREEN ROOM This upstairs loft bedroom has two single beds and a bunk bed. This room is a favourite for kids as there is also a television. The floor is carpeted and there is a free standing fan. AttractionsAlbert Falls dam is the major attraction where water skiing, fishing, canoeing, birding, game viewing and walking are offered. Mountain biking is also a popular weekend sport. Nearby attractions include the Albert Falls Game Reserve, Karkloof Spa, the Amble Inn Restaurant, Ecabazini Zulu Cultural Village and the Amble tourist route. ACTIVITIES AT THE LODGE Come and enjoy fishing, bird watching, walking or just chilling on the verandah. For the more active mountain bike riding, canoeing and waterskiing are an option. Bass fishing rods and mountain bikes can be provided. A ski boat is also for hire as long as a valid skippers licence can be produced. Our daily hiring rate is R1000 excl petrol. If you hire the boat for 3 or more consecutive days then the rate is R850 per day. If you hire the boat for 6 or more consecutive days then the rate is R700 per day Educational School Tours are available during harvesting season (May to October) by prior arrangement. ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA The Albert Falls dam is a haven for the keen birder, the game enthusiast and the water sportsperson. The Albert Falls Dam is rated as one of the best bass fishing dams in the country. It has also become a favourite art lure fishing destination. Fish species include bass, tilapia, bluegill, carp, barbel and scalies. Many visitors enjoy recreational motor-boating. You are sure to find a calm inlet for waterskiing. This is also an ideal destination for bird watchers with over 280 species of birdlife being sighted in the area. There is an abundance of water birds with the Fish Eagle needing special mention. The Game Park at the Albert Falls Resource Reserve contains a wide variety of wildlife including Rhino, Zebra, Impala, Blesbok, Reedbuck, Grey Duiker, Springbok, Red Hartebeest and Oribi. The Amble, an arts and crafts meander, was established in October 1997. Take a drive and enjoy cosy pubs and restaurants, arts and crafts, nurseries, a cultural Zulu village, picnic areas, tea gardens and animal farms. The spectacular Karkloof Spa is only five minutes from the lodge and is well worth a visit if you wish to spoil yourself. Scenic flights of the area can also be arranged - weather dependant. DirectionsFrom the N3 Highway, outside Pietermaritzburg, take the R33/M70 offramp (Church Street/Chota Motala). Pass two sets of traffic lights and then take a left at the T1 - Albert Falls Amble turnoff (the road just before Northway Mall). Drive for 22km on the Otto’s Bluff Road. You will pass Woodlands, Claridge, Ottos Bridge, Karkloof Spa and Lakeside Estate before you reach the D668. Lookout for the Windrush B&B and Ecabazini signs at the junction.
